easyJet: how to claim compensation
This page is independent. We are not affiliated with easyJet or any airline.
- Airline type
- easyJet UK (EZY) is a UK airline; easyJet Europe (EJU) holds an Austrian (EU) licence; easyJet Switzerland (EZS) holds a Swiss licence
- Rules that may apply
- EU261 for flights departing the EU, EEA or Switzerland. Flights into the EU from outside it (including from the UK): EU261 only if easyJet Europe or easyJet Switzerland operated the flight; on easyJet UK, EU261 does not apply (UK to EU flights are covered by UK261 as UK departures). UK261 for flights departing the UK, and flights into the UK on easyJet UK or easyJet Europe. easyJet Switzerland flights into the UK are not covered by UK261, because a Swiss licence is not an EU "Community carrier" licence (UK261 Art 2(c)).
1. Claim directly with easyJet
Claiming directly is free, and you keep the whole amount. Use the airline's own form:
easyJet Compensation Claims Portal (öffnet in einem neuen Tab) (opens the airline's website)
- Your flight number starts with EZY, EJU or EZS; enter the numbers only. If it starts with 9, enter the original flight number.
- All fields are required, and you cannot change details or get a copy after submitting. Save or print the summary page first.
- easyJet's form says disruption caused by weather, industrial action or air traffic control restrictions is not eligible. Under EU/UK case law, a strike by the airline's own staff generally is still compensated.
Mostly short and medium-haul: £220/€250 for 1,500 km or less, and £350/€400 for over 1,500 km up to 3,500 km. Longer routes outside the EU, such as London Gatwick to Hurghada (about 3,900 km), are in the top band: £520/€600, or £260/€300 for a 3 to 4 hour delay. Intra-EU flights over 3,500 km stay at €400. Which easyJet airline operated the flight affects which rules apply on flights into the EU or UK.

2. Common rejection reasons and how to respond
| What the airline may say | What to check or reply |
|---|---|
| "Air traffic control restrictions" | Ask for the slot or restriction details and how much of your delay it caused (C-315/15: only that part counts). |
| "Industrial action" | If the airline's own staff struck: under EU rules cite C-195/17 Krüsemann and C-28/20 Airhelp v SAS; under UK rules cite Civil Aviation Authority v Ryanair [2022] EWCA Civ 76 (C-28/20 came after Brexit and does not bind UK courts). |
| "Bad weather" | Ask whether weather affected your flight specifically, at that time, and why a later departure was not possible. |
| "Technical problem" | Technical faults are generally not extraordinary (C-549/07; C-257/14). |
| "We have no record of your booking or delay" | Send your booking confirmation, boarding pass and evidence of arrival time. |
The My Flight Money claim dashboard includes a prefilled rebuttal letter for each of these.
3. If easyJet refuses or does not reply
Flights under UK rules: dispute resolution (ADR)
easyJet is signed up to AviationADR for complaints under UK rules. You can go to ADR after the airline's final response, or after 8 weeks with no reply.
Flights under EU rules: enforcement body
The enforcement body in the country where the incident happened (for example the CAA for UK departures, DGAC for France). Enforcement bodies monitor airlines but may not be able to make an airline pay your individual claim (C-145/15 Ruijssenaars). See the official EU list (öffnet in einem neuen Tab).
Court
- England and Wales: small claims via Money Claim Online (öffnet in einem neuen Tab).
- Scotland: simple procedure (öffnet in einem neuen Tab).
- Cross-border within the EU: European Small Claims Procedure (öffnet in einem neuen Tab).
Check your claim deadline before you start.
